Amphora Q&A

CTRM Commercials

The commercial mechanics behind a CTRM purchase: how licences are actually priced, what support should cost, and how to structure a contract so scope, service levels and exit terms are clear from day one.

How much does a CTRM cost?

Cost depends on scope, deployment model and firm size rather than a fixed price list, driven mainly by user count, the number of commodities and entities in scope, integration requirements, and how much configuration versus custom development an implementation needs.

For the fuller breakdown of cost drivers and how to compare vendors on a like-for-like basis, see "How much does a CTRM cost?" in Buying a CTRM.

How are CTRM licences priced?

CTRM licensing typically follows one of a few models: perpetual per named or concurrent user, a flat enterprise or site licence for larger deployments, or, increasingly, a subscription/SaaS model billed periodically rather than as a large upfront perpetual licence.

Some vendors also price by module (trade capture, risk, logistics, settlement) so firms only licence the functionality they actually use, while others bundle the full trade lifecycle into a single licence. The right model depends on how predictable a firm's user count and usage are expected to be over the contract term; a subscription model generally suits firms wanting to avoid a large capital outlay, while a perpetual licence can suit firms planning long-term, stable usage.

What should CTRM support cost?

For perpetual or flat enterprise licences, CTRM support and maintenance is typically priced as an annual percentage of the licence value, a model that covers software updates, bug fixes, and a defined level of user support (response times, support hours, escalation paths).

What varies more than the headline percentage is what is actually included: whether product upgrades are free and automatic, whether configuration changes and change requests are covered or billed separately, and whether the support percentage rises as usage grows. The clearest way to compare support cost across vendors is to ask exactly what is and is not included for that percentage, rather than comparing the percentage figure alone.

For subscription licences, the support is covered in the monthly fee at no extra cost.

How should I structure a CTRM contract?

A well-structured CTRM contract covers five things clearly: scope (exactly which users, entities, commodities and modules are licensed), service levels (uptime, support response times, and what happens if they are not met), change management (how configuration changes, change requests and future scope additions are priced and approved), upgrade rights (whether new product versions are included automatically or billed as separate projects), and exit terms (data portability and transition assistance if the firm ever needs to move to another system).

Getting these five areas explicit at signing, rather than leaving them to be worked out later, is what prevents the "hidden costs" problem that many CTRM buyers report after go-live.

The Amphora Difference

Upgrades that don't reopen the commercial conversation

Amphora runs Symphony and Alchemy on a single branch, so upgrade rights are simple: every client runs the same version, with free, regular, automated upgrades included rather than billed as a separate project each time.
